Otis and his farm friends are enjoying a summer’s day playing their favorite game, follow-the-leader. The bull, however, has no interest in playing and stays in his pen, where he delights in intimidating the other animals.Suddenly the day turns frightening: the birds stop chirping, the wind picks up, and the sky turns dark and stormy. It’s a tornado! Otis rouses a game of follow-the-leader to get all of the farm animals safe and sound in the dried-up riverbanks of Mud Creek. But Otis hears a cry

(CNN) — One tornado stayed on the ground for 95 miles as it tore through towns in Kentucky and West Virginia. Two other twisters left behind 49-mile paths of destruction.

The dynamically charged nature of Friday’s atmosphere created an ideal environment for producing long-track, devastating tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.

Officials from the weather service identified at least 45 separate tornadoes in last week’s deadly outbreak across the Midwest and South. The unusually severe storm system affected millions of people in 10 states, officials said.

Neighborhoods were flattened. Schools were in ruins. Dozens died.

The tornadoes ripped across much of the Midwest and South on March 2, killing 39 people in five states including 15-month-old Angel Babcock and leaving Henryville, Ind. trashed. This year’s tornado season comes earlier and stronger. This blog will share with you some basic information on how to protect yourself from deadly tornadoes.

From March to May of each year, the southern states are often plagued by tornadoes. For northern states, tornadoes usually come during spring to the start of summer.

Tornadoes are considered as storms. And you know that storms are violent. The risks triggered by tornadoes are not because of the gustiness of the winds but by sudden and unanticipated occurrence.

Unlike hurricanes, that are comparatively stronger, the start of a tornado can not be easily tracked. Satellite weather systems can not easily spot them because of their sudden development and their relatively smaller scale.

Thus, people can just tell that there is a tornado when they actually see one. Tornadoes are massive and destructive mass of air accumulating rapidly is a circular manner. The wind is so strong that just about everything which comes to the way of the tornado is easily flown into it.

To protect yourself from tornadoes, you need to be able to tell if a tornado is approaching.

Before using any safety measure, it is vital that you are knowledgeable about the appearance and the indicators of this deadly weather phenomenon. The wind is probably not destructive minutes before the tornado touches the place. Often, before a tornado is observed, the wind may be very still. There may or may not be presence of rain.

Typically, tornadoes occur at the trailing end of a thunderstorm. Thus, if you have a strong thunderstorm, be prepared on the possibility that a tornado may come anytime during or before the thunderstorm ends.

Because tornadoes are made up basically of strong and whirling winds, one can not easily see them. Often, reported cases indicate that the tornado appears like a cloud-like structure.

Tornadoes can be seen due to the debris and dust they have accumulated while tracking their courses. You may see the debris rotating in the air in circular, whirling motion.

Before a tornado hits a place, you can also hear loud roaring sound that is almost like an approaching freight train. The wind will also become turbulent and destructive.

Here are some safety tips for tornadoes:

When you see and feel the warning signs of an approaching tornado, find a safe shelter right away. Remember, tornadoes are destructive and fatal not just because of the strong winds but because of the debris they have accumulated. So make sure the shelter you find would protect you from any such debris.

Homes located in areas that are often hit by tornadoes almost always have basements. Basements offer reliable protection to people during tornadoes, so find one during an attack of a tornado.

If you are in your car, just get out and find a safe shelter. Or simply lie down on sturdy structure. Lie flat and cover the head with hands. Be alert and look out for falling debris coming from the tornado.

After the tornado, make sure any structure in your home is not significantly damaged. Otherwise, seek professional help all at once to ensure your safety.

Tornadoes are phenomenal that one can not prevent it from occurring. However, if you know the safety tips for tornadoes to protect yourself, you would not only save yourself but also help many others.

HENRYVILLE, Ind. — Even as they mourned their losses, residents lumbered forward Monday to restore what killer tornadoes took last week.

Plank by wooden plank, step by uneven step, the tornado’s survivors cleared away bricks and boarded up windows, hoping to salvage the remnants of their tattered longtime homes.

In a hilltop neighborhood high above gutted Henryville High School, at least a dozen houses were damaged or destroyed. Yet the residents there said it would take more than a ferocious twister to chase them away. They owed that much to one another.

“If I can save it, I will,” John Priddy, 35, said above the hum of a portable generator outside his split-level home built into the hillside. “Once I get the mess out of here, I’ll have a better idea of whether I can rebuild.”

Priddy’s roof was torn open and the windows were blown out. His wife, Sally, escaped injury by hiding under a pool table in the basement. Priddy and his daughters, Ellie, 5, and Daisy, 8, weren’t home when the tornado hit.

They are staying with in-laws, leaving Priddy, and a surprise pint-sized army of Boy Scouts, to clean things up.

There were at least 80 tornadoes rampaged across the United States, from the Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico on March 2, 2012. It was more than is typically observed during the entire month of March, tracking firm AccuWeather.com reported on Monday. Many people who are not familiar with Tornadoes may ask “What is a tornado?”. I would like to share with you some basic information about a tornado in this blog.

Earth’s weather can produce various forms of windstorm including tornadoes, waterspouts and dust devils. Although they have the common attributes of a column of rotating air, they are actually formed through different processes. Dust devils and small whirlwinds are caused by severe local heating of the earth’s surface that makes the air rise rapidly. The interaction of air current high up, produce tornadoes and they are always accompanied by intense thunderstorms.

Tornado

Though the US records the highest number of tornadoes it is Netherlands that is most vulnerable to tornadoes. Late winter or early spring is the prime season in the US for the tornadoes. It is a time when there is instable climate in the country.

The birth of tornadoes takes place within thunderstorms. Many of them are created in the supercell thunderstorms but hurricanes and squall lines “ cause tornadoes.

It is not yet known clearly about how exactly tornadoes are actually formed. We hypothesize that winds from different directions results in the total thunderstorm rotating. Within it, the cold and warm air currents counteract and form an air column that spins, the mesocyclone ; this at times may lead to a wall cloud that is a sure sign of an upcoming tornado.

This mesocyclone spins down the updraft of the cloud thus making it a funnel cloud. By the time it touches the ground, it turns into a tornado. It takes up the color of whatever debris it is sucking in. Based upon on the land form on which it is moving tornadoes can be either invisible or partly visible.

The tornadoes move together with the source thunderstorm. The course of destruction rages from 30 feet to over half a mile. The tornadoes can travel anywhere from some yards to hundreds of miles Speeding at a rate as high as 300 miles an hour, with the updraft speed moving up to even a 180 miles an hour. Sometimes tornadoes last for a few seconds and sometimes for more than an hour; but in an average tornadoes last for about 15 minutes.

On average, about 800 tornados are reported annually in the United States. About 70 percent are “weak,” finds NOAA, with winds less than 110 mph. Just under 29 percent are “strong,” with winds between 110 and 205 mph. Only 2 percent of all tornadoes are what NOAA characterizes as “violent,” with winds in excess of 205 mph, but they account for 70 percent of all twister deaths.

Indiana Tornado Victim Lost Part of Both Legs While Saving Her Children

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Marysville, Ind., mother lost parts of both legs but saved the lives of her two children by covering them with her body as a tornado crushed their home on top of them Friday, her husband said.

Stephanie Decker, 36, lost one leg above the knee and the other above the ankle, said her husband, Joe Decker. She is in stable condition at University Hospital in Louisville. The children survived without a scratch, he said.

“What I told her was, ‘You’re alive and you get to see your kids grow up,’” Joe Decker said. “If you look in the basement, there’s no way anybody should have lived, let alone two kids who don’t have a scratch on them.”

Decker said he was texting his wife from Silver Creek High School, where he works, telling her that radar was showing a tornado was headed directly at their three-story brick and stone house.

She had arrived home minutes before and immediately huddled in the basement with their 8-year-old son, Dominic, and 5-year-old daughter, Reese.

Then she “just stopped texting me,” Joe Decker said, standing outside his devastated home on Sunday afternoon. “She was on top of them.”

Joe Decker said his wife, while not able to speak strongly yet because of a ventilator tube, narrated the events by typing into an iPad in the hospital.

She said she saw a massive piece of debris collapsing on her and pulled her daughter out of the way of it at the last moment.

“She just kind of grabbed her and turned,” Joe Decker said. “She doesn’t remember anything after that.”

The heroics continued after the funnel cloud passed, Joe Decker added, with their son rushing out into the blinding hail to alert neighbors, several of whom quickly came to her rescue.

He credited several neighbors who came to their aid even as their own houses were being pulverized or threatened.

Brian Lovins, a Clark County Sheriff’s officer, put a tourniquet on her to stop severe bleeding and drove her off until he could flag down an ambulance, which brought her to Clark Memorial Hospital. She was later transferred to University Hospital.

The couple had had the 8,000-square-foot, three-level house built as their dream home, Joe Decker said. He and Stephanie’s father themselves had built its large rear deck.

The house is now completely pulverized; an arched stone entry now lies in the area near where Stephanie Decker and the children had huddled for cover. A bathtub rested at least 200 feet away in a field still saturated by rain and melted hail.

The house “took about nine months to build and about four seconds” to knock down, he said.
